about

This song follows a departed Martian in their personal Heaven, the Earth. The afterlife is way harder than anything they were expecting; for one, there's all these living people everywhere! The Martian presumed that they would be treated like an angel, but no one even sees them.

Though it's a big shock, some things are familiar. They can understand most human speech, and some of the social problems, too. The ghost is moved by witnessing people's solidarity, and tries to find themself by chipping in where appropriate. Ultimately they decide to reincarnate on Earth. The ghost's last advice to their mortal self is to moderate their activism with rest.

lyrics

On Earth my promised resting place,
They share in the tongues that are spoken in space.
All the birds and frogs have their own call,
A wonder that animals live at all.

There are people who will fight for living,
For fairness, and to be themselves.
And that tickles my soul as it did when I lived,
It's foolish to think they would spirit me back,

Oh, surely when I still drew breath,
The people of Earth watched me after their death.
As a ghost from Mars I won't displace
Earth's fate from hands of the human race.

I will step forth when the people want it,
Opposing those who cause their pain.
In the places they ask I will do what I can,
And rejoin the movement I championed in life.

Promised I could reign here, that was never true.
Those that find their own way, have more bravery.
I will find a new way forward, better than my past.
Smiling with my ruby lips, now take another chance.

Now make your choices once again,
They're hardest to keep in your moments of pain.
But you're only human, raise a toast,
You can't take your cues from a tireless ghost.

Take your leisure when you feel you need it,
Your body and your mind need peace.
You will never find Heaven if you make it your Hell,
To focus on guilt would help no one.
